Most of the previous design (using the PIC16F84A) was preserved to minimize rework. The PIC16F88 is pin:pin compatible with the '84A but has an internal oscillator so the crystal and a couple of cap's are unneeded. The picture to the left shows the overall layout of the picfocus "mainboard". I soldered on a experimenter's pc board, apart from the PIC and motor driver chip, which are socketed.

Here you can see the piggyback box that holds the wireless receiver and its output decoder/multiplexer board underneath. In my case, this is connected to the "mainboard" box via a 8-pin RJ-45 cable, since it was an afterthought not included in the original design. Not a bad thing, since the PIC might generate excessive RF noise if it was too close to the receiver.
